I have a few 'hermified' items, and they work well. ;)

When something that would be considered 'off' to work in a tank and it serves the purpose, one has 'hermified' it. :)

If it works and serves the purpose of meeting their needs... well it should be used. Did you know there is a name for that??

But savage as long as the hermies seem happy, who are we to actually make them live in an "aesthetically pleasing" crabitat?

Your tanks sounds fun Savage, I am always amazed at just how agile the crabs are, I think I need a bit of a tank mix up soon.

HtLBs tank looks like a jungle paradise. decided to "hang" the cholla wood from a hook and that worked great; very solid. and a nice deep salt water pool with some plants hanging around it. i can't wait for him to come up and explore.

can a hermit crab climb onto something where the lip of it is as tall as his shell tho? if not, i'll have to try to "sink" everything.

i gave in to the fact that what works for my crabitats may not be as aesthetically pleasing as i had hoped, but really, it doesn't look bad. using that egg thingy opened up space to put in a real nice moss pit made from a ceramic ash tray.

i'm a little concerned tho that because the insides are very smooth and slightly sloped he might get in and not out, so i've draped fish netting behind it, kind of hanging down. a rescue net.

i changed up both tats considerably this weekend; found this...egg microwave cooker thing that has two little pools and it is exactly jeffrey sized, so one is fresh and one is salt water.

HtLB is still down but i see a breathing hole opened to the surface on one side of the water dish. i guess he's decided he finally found the ultimate spot to molt. no calci-sand, just regular fine-grind.

It looks like CSJ up and running again this morning.
ladybug15057, Sunday 07 of March, 2010, 10:14:33 CST
Seems CSJ is off air again, and giving a fatal error this time?
ladybug15057, Friday 05 of March, 2010, 22:00:39 CST
as in if one clicks onto something and leads to an error page.

SW, how are you doing? You were so sad before. Everything doing good? I hope so! & Pop, I'm glad Marie was here to take care of you. Take care & have a good week-end everyone!
Lette, Friday 05 of March, 2010, 19:39:41 CST
I think tonite I will put a bottle over him because he's so close to the water I'm afraid the others will be curious. I'm thinking it will be a surface molt because he has blocked the entry so he's in complete darkness! Strange.

with him in it to the water & just reached out his claw & got water & dampened the area around him. I never saw anything like it.

water & was buried this a.m. Now my big guy is starting to get itchy. He's climbing the walls, but then he went in a hut that's too smal & dragged the hut

Since, they only use boiling water to hydrate the CF and haven't had problems since.
ladybug15057, Friday 05 of March, 2010, 14:34:31 CST
I know of a couple crabbers who claim to have never had any pests problems until they began to use Cocofiber.
popgoblin, Friday 05 of March, 2010, 13:39:28 CST
OH Okay thanks Ladybug. I'm pretty sure that they came from something I put into the tank (coconut shell or EE) as That is where I found them first. I'm adding more info to my blog now. As I learned more last night.

Do you use calsi sand, or have calsi sand mixed in your substrate?
ladybug15057, Friday 05 of March, 2010, 13:09:28 CST
Usually a hermie will dampen the substrate themselves to burrow. But you can put 1-2 drops a day over where you know he is burrowed at if you use a dry substrate.
